Why are there duplicate Message Center items with different MCIDs?

Different tenants receive versions of the same message or update at different times, with different MCIDs. This means when using the ChangePilot standard feed, you may see duplicates of the same message.

This article is relevant for ChangePilot users accessing the ChangePilot Portal. All ChangePilot Pro installations are tenant-specific, so won't experience item duplication.

Due to the nature of how Microsoft releases updates, you may notice duplicates of certain messages, changes, or features in the ChangePilot standard feed.

Why Are There Duplicate Messages?

  • Staggered Release Cycles: Microsoft often rolls out updates and new features in phases. This means that different tenants may receive versions of the same message at different times.
  • Varying MCIDs: Each release or update is associated with a Message Center ID (MCID). When the same feature is released across different tenants at different times, it is accompanied by different MCIDs. This causes the same message to appear more than once.
  • Localization and Tenant Types: Messages can differ slightly based on the localisation for different regions or the types of tenants (e.g., commercial vs. educational). This can create variations in the messages received.

Due to these factors, the ChangePilot standard feed might display what appear to be duplicate items. While this can seem confusing, it is a reflection of Microsoft's deployment strategy rather than an issue with the ChangePilot system.

Keep in mind that despite appearing similar, messages with different MCIDs may contain slight variations that are crucial for different tenant environments. If you have access to your tenant's Message Center in the Microsoft 365 admin centre, you can find the item version/MCID relevant to your tenant and use that MCID within ChangePilot.
